Southfield School

Summary

In 2012, th+a completed a campus master plan and conceptual design for the Southfield School, a private co-educational day school serving Preschool-2 through Grade 8. th+a recently completed the implementation of the first phase of the master plan with the expansion of the school's early childhood, art and library facilities, as well as the construction of a new STEM building.

Established in 1934, the campus grew up around the original administrative building, built in the southern colonial vernacular. Using the existing historical architecture as the basis for design, th+a set out to provide the campus with a formal organizational structure. The planning and design team began by assessing the administration's strategic plan and studying classroom usage, relationships of common facilities and the integrity of existing structures, then established a plan to attain optimum efficiency while accommodating Southfield's current and future program requirements.

To unify the campus, the team developed a linear axis based on the iconic administration building, formed the campus around a new central courtyard, and reorganized the classroom relationships to stair step up the natural topography of the site, around the courtyard campus core.

The new master plan incorporates extensive reassignments of existing space with a blend of new construction and renovation and expansion of existing structures. th+a conceptually designed new pre-school buildings and a new Science, Technology and Math (STEM) Building, and relocated the Library and existing black box theater around and into the new unifying campus plan.  The images shown represent the basis of the fundraising program and highlight the ideas behind the design, and provide representative images of the new buildings and how they reinforce the established design vocabulary of the campus. The team developed plans to indicate the specific program responses of each new building and each renovated structure, including appropriate playground space needed to support the pre-school program, and as required by child care licensing regulations. The conceptual design for the multiple buildings also includes cosmetic upgrades to establish a cohesive aesthetic design for the campus.
