th+a architects designed the concepts for a future facility for the Vogel Alcove, a not-for-profit organization which provides free childcare and early childhood development services to the homeless community, and focuses on helping children from six weeks to five years of age.
Prominently located just south of Dallas City Hall, the Vogel Alcove site provides a gateway entry at the northern edge of the burgeoning Cedars neighborhood. The new facility will provide flexible spaces, such as learning environments that are capable of responding to fluctuating numbers of different age groups of children.Several multi-purpose rooms incorporate
raised platform areas to enable small performances as well as teaching and play activities.
On the light-filled second level, a children's library will provide a cheerful environment for reading and storybook time. An inner courtyard will offer a safe playground shaded by the executive offices located on the third level. The rooftop garden will offer a natural learning environment. Multiple sustainable strategies are incorporated into the design of the facility including natural day lighting, natural ventilation, shading, and energy efficient design.
th+a previously completed an expansion of the existing Vogel Alcove facility, which opened in 2009 and enabled the program to offer counseling and diagnostic services.
